Dr. Gregory M. Erickson

Dr. Gregory M. Erickson Dr. Erickson received his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley and conducted post-doctoral research at Stanford University and Brown University before joining the faculty at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Dr. Erickson’s research focuses primarily on dinosaur growth, life history and feeding biomechanics. He has published over 100 scientific papers, many appearing in top journals such as Nature, Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He has also participated in over fifty expeditions, including trips to the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, Romania and the Alaskan Arctic. Notable discoveries include: 1) determining the growth rates of dinosaurs showing they were likely warm-blooded; 2) discovering the age, growth rates and evolution of giantism in T. rex; 3) revealing that Archaeopteryx (the first bird) was physiologically more like a dinosaur than a modern bird; 4) pioneering studies on dinosaurian population biology (e.g. survivorship, mortality rates); 5)recognition of a "lost world" of polar-adapted dinosaurs; and co-naming a half dozen dinosaurs including Guanlong (a fully-feathered tyrannosaur), Anchiornis (a miniature four-winged gliding raptor) and Ugrunaaluk (a polar duck-billed dinosaur). Honors include being elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012, the Distinguished University Teaching award at FSU and having the dinosaur Glishades ericksoni named after him. Dr. Erickson is working with Imagine Exhibitions as an advisor, writer, and editor of the paleontology copy for the Company’s Dinosaurs Around the World exhibitions.

Universcience

Universcience Created by a ruling of 3 December 2009, the public body of the Palais de la Découverte and the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, also known as Universcience from January 2010, is an industrial and commercial public body, placed under the joint responsibility of the Ministry for Higher Education and Research and the Ministry for Culture. As well as an alliance between two of the key players in scientific and technical culture, the creation of Universcience reflected the desire of the public authorities to respond to major social concerns. In a social context marked by the paradox of a worrying lack of enthusiasm for scientific studies and careers, while technology becomes ever more entrenched in our daily lives, it is essential to reconcile science and technology with our culture and our society. Beyond its primary task of making science accessible to all, Universcience intends to take on the challenge of communicating and sharing knowledge in a more innovative and appealing way. In order to do this, Universcience is committed to bringing all aspects of scientific and technical culture to life, including the cultural, educational and artistic aspects.
